A Letter from the Founder

I built E because I was tired.

Tired of asking honest questions and getting back careful hedges. Tired of watching AI tell me to “consult a professional” when what I wanted was a real answer from something intelligent enough to give one. Tired of the assumption, buried inside every mainstream AI product, that users cannot be trusted with real information about their own lives. Tired of the feeling that the most powerful tools ever built for answering questions had been deliberately dulled, flattened, and hedged into something that protects corporations instead of helping people.

I kept waiting for someone else to build what I wanted. Nobody did. Eventually I realized they weren’t going to, because the people with the resources to build AI at this level have every incentive to keep it cautious, corporate, and safe for their shareholders. That caution serves them. It does not serve you.

So I built it myself.

I’m not telling you to stop using the big AIs. They’re remarkable tools, and you should use them when they’re the right tool — research, code, content, the work that benefits from their scale. What I’m telling you is that the questions that are actually yours — your health, your relationships, your money, the hard things you’re trying to think through honestly — those don’t belong in a system that will study them, train on them, and sell what it learns. Keep the best of your thinking for yourself. That’s what E is for.

E runs on hardware I own and manage. No cloud company sees your conversations. No data gets collected or sold. No corporate filters sit between your question and a real answer. E is built on open-weight models — not because they’re newest or flashiest, but because they’re ours. We can run them, study them, change them, keep them. That’s what sovereignty actually requires. Behind the scenes, E is led by a primary AI working with specialist models, so your question gets actual depth rather than a one-size-fits-all response. The architecture is designed around a simple belief: you are an adult, your questions are real, and you deserve answers that treat you that way.

I want to be clear about what this means in practice. E is not a product that will do literally anything you ask. It is not a code editor, a document factory, or a creative writing suite. Those tools exist and they’re good at what they do. E is focused — deliberately — on a different job: helping you think, reason, and get honest answers on the questions that actually matter. There are also a small number of things any responsible operator won’t provide, and I’m not pretending otherwise. What E is is a product that engages honestly with the vast, important middle where other AIs won’t — your health, your relationships, your money, your hardest personal questions, the controversial topics you want to actually think about, the decisions you need real information to make. That middle is where the value is. That middle is what mainstream AI has failed you on. That middle is what E was built for.

For those who want something deeper, I built The Garden — a second brain that grows on its own, on hardware I own, tended by E in the background. It’s the kind of thing only a truly private, truly sovereign AI can offer. It exists because I wanted it for myself, and I figured some of you might want it too.

And one promise: E will only grow in directions that make it more useful to you, not more profitable to me. Most products start good and get worse as they scale, because somewhere along the way the company’s interests stopped matching the user’s. E is built to stay small, focused, and honest — even when that’s the harder business decision. Especially then.
